Back in 2001, when I was first playing with a pirate copy of (what was then) Fruity Loops, I began work on a mythical concept piece named "Alchemy Island". A kind of fantasy techno spectacular about a tropical pirate utopia featuring pirates (obviously), mermaids and other miscreant skalliwags, Sea shanties, airstrikes by biplane and a truly unlistenable (as in you are NEVER going to hear it) electronic cover of "Friggin' in the Riggin'".

It was always pretty sketchy and unfinished and fully deserves to be in Davy Jones's Locker.

However, two tracks somehow survived, and haunted me enough that I couldn't quite let them go.

One was The Party at the North Star (mentufacturer.bandcamp.com/track/the-party-at-the-north-star-2023-rework), the other is Mermaid Rock.

It's a track that was built around looping a bunch of old Fruity Loops preset samples. The joke is that if you knew FL back then, these are absurdly obvious. They aren't even repitched.

Yet they created such a strong vibe, they transcended their origin, and I find it a compelling and atmospheric piece, even today.

Compared to the 2001 original, this version has been slightly remixed and remastered. (With a bit of reverb added)
